WASHINGTON D.C. (WJLA)- The National Cathedral will be ringing quite a lot this weekend. A total of 16 hours to be exact.
Starting today at 6 p.m.. the bells will ring for two hours, tomorrow at 1:15 p.m. they will ring for three hours and 45 minutes, on Sunday at noon for three and a half hours, and then again later that night at 6:15 p.m. for an hour.
The occasion is a special event that only occurs once every 50 years, and it is called change ringing. It started in England back in the 17th century, and the National Cathedral is happy to continue the tradition.
"I think we in the Cathedral think it's wonderful to be able to make 50 years in which the ringing has continued," says National Cathedral bell ringer Quilla Roth.
Just in case you thought that this would be the loudest thing in Washington D.C. this weekend, you should also know that the motorcycle group "Rolling Thunder" will also be in town.
