D.C. police investigate 4 overnight shootings, 2 fatal
WASHINGTON (AP/ABC7) - It was a violent night in Washington after several people were shot within hours. D.C. police are investigating four shootings, two of them fatal, in different parts of the city.
Police say shortly before 2 a.m. Saturday, Anthony Sanchez, 18, was shot in the chest in the Columbia Heights neighborhood. He was taken to a hospital by a private vehicle and died.
Police and D.C. Councilmember Jim Graham say Sanchez was a ward of the Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services. Graham says Sanchez lived in a DYRS group home and had a pass to visit his family for the night.
"He was coming to drop off his sister... I don't know what happened after that," says Danny Cruz, a friend. "I was just with him last night..."
Around 4:30 a.m. Saturday morning, police say two men were shot in Southeast Washington. One of the men, 30-year-old Derrick Scott of Capitol Heights, Md., later died.
There were two other shootings early Saturday that led to non-life-threatening injuries.
