      Mount Vernon raccoon tests positive for canine distemper

      (WJLA) - A raccoon in Mount Vernon has tested positive for canine distemper, sending caution to area dog owners.{ }

      Canine distemper is highly contagious and could be deadly for dogs. According to the ASPCA, the first signs of canine distemper include sneezing, coughing, and thick mucus coming from the eyes and nose. Dogs with canine distemper could also have a fever, lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, depression and a loss of appetite.{ }

      Five raccoons were collected over the past few weeks near Fort Hunt and Namassin roads. One of{ }those raccoons tested positive for the disease.{ }

      Canine distemper can also affect skunks, foxes and coyotes.{ }
