Two crashes involving four motorcycles caused serious injuries and temporarily closed the eastbound lanes of I-66 between Exit 123 and Nutley Street in Vienna Saturday afternoon.
Virginia State Police say two motorcyclists braked for stopped traffic on I-66 and they were hit by a third motorcyclist about 12:20 p.m. The fourth motorcyclist crashed while trying to avoid the first crash. The four were traveling together, police say.
Two riders suffered serious injuries, with one of those considered to be life-threatening. A third had non-life-threatening injuries. The other one had only minor injuries.
Two of the riders are from Ohio and one is from New York, police say.
Police did not confirm whether or not the riders were in the D.C. area to take part in this weekend’s Rolling Thunder, an annual Memorial Day event that honors veterans.
Traffic was moving again by 2 p.m.
Police say all four riders were wearing helmets. The incident is under investigation and charges are pending.
A Rolling Thunder participant was killed late Friday night after he was hit by a car as he turned his three-wheel Harley Davidson onto Constitution Avenue near the National Mall.
