(WJLA) - Santa Claus is trading in his sleigh for a heavy-duty police vehicle Wednesday in the name of bringing children some Christmas Joy.

The Montgomery County Police Department is holding its annual "Santa Ride" on Wednesday, an annual event benefiting the families that live at the Children's Inn at the National Institutes of Health.

Starting at 10 a.m., Santa will begin cruising around Montgomery County in a BearCat, the county's armored police tactical vehicle, picking up and delivering gift bags and donations.

The NIH's Children's Inn is a place where sick children and their families stay while receiving treatment at the Bethesda facility.

The Santa Ride will stop at Wegman's in Germantown, a Gaithersburg car dealership and at various places in Rockville, Olney, Bethesda and Silver Spring before arriving at the Children's Inn this evening.
