A family will have to go into the holiday season without their beloved father and grandfather, who was killed helping another motorist.
Willie Randoplh Prince, 78, of the 3500 block of Burleigh Drive in Mitchellville was hit by a car while trying to help a stranded driver whose car had broken down, Prince George's County Police said.
Prince was assisting another person to move a disabled vehicle in the 3500 block of Enterprise Road. When he returned to his vehicle, he was hit by a passing car.
He was taken to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead.
"My dad was a giver... he gave everything to pretty much everybody," said the man's daughter Donna Prince as she was sifting through photos of her father in their Mitchellville home.
Willie Prince was a veteran of the Korean War and worked at the VA hospital in D.C. He was married to his wife Jean for 52 years until she died six years ago, their daughter said.
"He insisted on giving us a jump," said Scotty Archer, the man whose car broke down. "He was going back across the street to go get his car. I turned my head for one second ...."
The driver of the striking vehicle, a young woman, remained on the scene and is cooperating with police. Police said no charges will be filed.
Prince's 15-year-old grandson Damian lost his own father years ago.
"I called him Dad," Damian Prince said of Willie. "He was a great person, a great spirit, and he loved me. He'd do anything for me."
Stopping to help the driver was in character for Prince, who picked up hitchhikers and took in stray animals, his family said.
"They say there's no greater love than to lay your life down for a friend... that's what my dad did," said his daughter Donna.
