COCKEYSVILLE, Md. (WJLA/AP) – A Laurel boy drowned on his 13th birthday in the lake at Oregon Ridge Park during an outing with a camping group, Baltimore County fire officials said.
People saw the boy in distress about 12:30 p.m. Friday and watched him go under in the lake in Cockeysville.
Lifeguards stationed at the lake's beach quickly went into the water to search for the youth, but to no avail.
Fire department water rescuers took over the search and recovered the boy's body shortly after 3 p.m.
Police later identified him as Dennis Kemp and said he was with a group from Silver Spring-based Camp Sonshine.
Witnesses said Kemp was swimming in deeper part of the lake, where everyone must pass a swim test before being allowed in. Fire officials confirmed Kemp had passed the test.
The lake was closed until further notice following the drowning death.
“This is a terrible tragedy,” said County Executive Kevin Kamenetz, who visited the park and spoke with Dennis’ parents and park staff following the incident. “On behalf of the citizens of Baltimore County, I offer deepest sympathy to the victim’s family and friends.”
