A Maryland woman was shot and killed by police after she ran an officer over with her car while she was in Florida celebrating her birthday Monday evening, according to authorities.

Miami Beach Police say that Cariann Hithon, 22, of Bowie was driving fast in a BMW on 12th Street and Ocean Drive when she crashed into two vehicles and drove off. Police say Hithon then hit a sedan with people in it near Collins Avenue while running a red light.

Hithon was driving away from that crash when she hit Officer David Cajuso as police were responding to the scene at 12th Street and Collins Avenue, sending him flying through the air, according to authorities.

Witnesses say that Hithon looked extremely drunk during the incident.

This led another officer to open fire on Hithon's car which then crashed into a parked vehicle, police say.

“I had to calm my spirit and understand,” said her father Cary Hithon. “I don’t know what happened so I can’t be too quick to judge.”

Both Hithon and Cajuso were taken to JMH Trauma Center where police say Hithon died from her injuries.

Cajuso was released from the hospital Tuesday morning.

"Something there happened to my daughter in the moment," said Cary Hithon. "It caused her to react nothing like anything I can recall or understand."

A passenger in the vehicle was identified Tuesday afternoon as 22-year-old Ryan Jerrell Lucas, according to Miami-Dade Police.

The Miami-Dade Police Department is investigating the shooting and Miami Beach Police are investigating the crashes.

Hithon's family says she was studying political science at Temple University and hoped to go on to be an attorney.
