Mary's Center gives out more than 1,000 toys to kids before holidays
WASHINGTON (ABC7) —
A nine-year-old boy lit up when a Star Wars toy was handed to him.
Welcome to Santa’s Gift Shop in Northwest Washington, where the elves have the pleasure of making kids smile.
Elizabeth Gonzalez got a glitter lamp.
“I love glitter and I add glitter to everything,” said Gonzalez.
Before the toys were handed out, families lined up in front of Mary’s Center. Some waited as long as three hours, all for the kids to get one toy each.
Mary’s Center is typically where they get medical care, but today the doctor ordered nothing but smiles as more than 1,000 toys were given away.
“This is Christmas for them,” said Juanita Afia, a patient at Mary’s Center, who brought her three children to wait in line at the Adams Morgan location.
“I will wrap it up and keep it ‘til Christmas morning,” said Afia. “It’s been difficult so and they’ve been helping."
Santa said cheese with the kids before they walked, or rode, away with a toy.
“This is a moment to say we care and America cares because all the toys were given, not by Latinos, not by immigrants, all the toys were given by the American people,” said Maria Gomez, President of Mary’s Center.
