Maryland Senate committee votes to repeal death penalty

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - A state Senate committee has passed a bill that would repeal the death penalty in Maryland.

The measure passed the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee in a 6-5 vote with amendments on Thursday.

The bill now moves to the full Senate floor, where it also expected to pass.

Maryland has five men on death row. The state's last execution was under then-Gov. Robert Ehrlich, a Republican, in 2005.
