Maryland man accused of scam targeting the disabled

A Maryland man is accused of a scam targeting vulnerable adults in Montgomery County.

Montgomery County police allege 50-year-old DeShaune Johnson used a scam to steal tens of thousands of dollars from at least four disabled adult residents of the Inwood House in Wheaton.

A man who only wanted to be identified with his first name, Edward, says he lost more than $600 dollars to the scam a few months ago.

"Made me feel stupid. Made feel like I wasn't even thinking," he said.

He promised to hire the victims for part-time work. Edward says Johnson asked for money up front for a uniform and background check.

"I think it was just a human shark looking for easy prey," Edward said.

"This individual victimized our most vulnerable adults," said Sharif Hidayat, the police officer who investigated the rip-offs. Hidayat wonders whether are more victims exist.

"They were trying to do the right thing and get a job," he said of the victims.
