Maryland Giant union workers vote to authorize possible strike

(WJLA) - Thousands of Giant Food workers in the Maryland suburbs took a first step toward a possible strike Wednesday after one of the chain's unions voted to authorize a walkout, the Baltimore Sun reports.

The Sun's Lorraine Mirabella said that the vote doesn't mean that the United Food & Commercial Workers Local 400 will immediately strike. Both they and Safeway workers from Local 27 have been working under an extension of a labor contract that expired on Oct. 31.

"Our members put Giant on notice that it is long past time to come to the table with a proposal that provides them with the security, respect and dignity they have more than earned," Local 400 President Mark P. Federici said in a statement, according to the Sun.

Safeway workers also planned on voting on a similar move Wednesday afternoon.

The current extension to the expired agreement runs through Dec. 20.
