Robert Griffin III got a special invitation this year to the Marine Corps Ball when a military couple in Maryland found a clever way to get the attention of Washington's starting quarterback.
Creating a video, Jimmy Shea and his wife Crystal Starace deliver a top 10 on why RG3 and his wife Rebecca should be the belles of the ball.
Griffin responded to Shea by Twitter on Sunday: "Dear @jimmydshea, Yes, you & your wife are hilarious and im honored by your invite to the Marine Corps Ball."
But he added, "It's the day before a game so I can't make it @jimmydshea."
Sitting in their Columbia backyard Saturday, the couple was giddy talking with ABC7 about making the video and then posting it on YouTube last week.
"We had talked about it here and there and one day I came home and I was like, 'let's just do it,'" Shea says.
A sergeant in the Marine Corps who served as a combat correspondent in Afghanistan, Shea has always had a passion for the burgundy and gold, a passion shared by Starace.
They decided that inviting RG3, whose parents were both U.S. Army sergeants, to the Marine Corps Ball in November was the perfect way to show their favorite football player what he means to the community and to them.
"It's just so refreshing to see someone so big and so loved to keep his personal life low key and still be someone that everyone loves," Starace says.
And their video love letter is really catching on. Both of Griffin's sisters have enthusiastically posted the video on Twitter and Facebook, along with Shea's "Hail to the Redskins" beatbox.
The Marine Corps Ball is scheduled for November 2 in Arlington. The next day, Washington has a 1 p.m. home game against San Diego, so Shea and Starace are hoping RG3 can at least pop in to the party and say hello.
