WOODSTOCK, Va. (AP/WJLA) - A grand jury has indicted a Strasburg man who brought a 2-by-4 piece of wood reading "high powered rifle" into an elementary school.

According to The Daily News Record, 33-year-old Christopher Johnson is charged with a misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct for the December scare at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Strasburg. A Shenandoah County Circuit Court grand jury returned the indictment Wednesday.

Police say Johnson carried the large piece of wood into the school days after a gunman killed 26 at a Connecticut school with the same name.

Authorities say Johnson told police he was trying to deliver a message about school safety.

Johnson's next court appearance is Oct. 30 in Shenandoah County Circuit Court.
