MECHANICSVILLE, Md. (WJLA) - The St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office is searching for a man and woman caught on video attempting to lure a 6-year-old boy into their car - while another young child sat in the backseat.
The incident occurred in Mechanicsville just after 2 p.m. on Tuesday. Home surveillance video shows two people inside a red SUV pull up to a home where the boy was playing in his front yard.
Disturbingly, the would-be kidnappers called to the boy by name as they tried to get him to get into their car.
"That's tragic," said Dorris Frederick, who lives nearby. "This is such a quiet neighborhood."
The passenger of the vehicle is described as a young white woman with blonde hair. The driver is described as an older black man. Police say there was a younger child in the backseat of the car as well.
The make and model of the red SUV are unclear.
"You think you're safe in your own surroundings," Frederick said.
A relative inside the boy's home told ABC7 off-camera Thursday that the car parked in front of the home, and then one of the adults got out and opened the back door and tried to wave the boy in, calling him by name.
The sheriff's office is reportedly taking a good look at the video, as well as video from other cameras on the street. They said they do have some leads.
Other local residents say they will be on the lookout for the suspects as well.
"That is terrible," nearby resident Mark Drake said when he heard of the incident Thursday.
