Makayla Darden, 8, shot; 2 arrested

(WJLA) - Police have made two arrests in connection with a Friday shooting that sent an 8-year-old girl to the hospital.

Karie Brown, 19, and Demtrius Nathaniel Patten, 21, both of Southeast Washington, were arrested and charged with assault with intent to kill.

Crews were called to the Wheeler Terrace apartments in the 1200 block of Valley Avenue SE around 3 p.m. and found the young girl, Makayla Darden, suffering from a gunshot wound to her upper shoulder.

Makayla's grandmother, Beverly Darden, told ABC7 the girl was walking from her aunt's apartment building when she was shot in the shoulder.

Police say Makayla was transported in life-threatening condition. According to her grandmother, she was breathing on her own and was taken into surgery at Children's National Medical Center.
