LANDOVER, Md. (WJLA) - Tens of thousands of young swimmers around the world gathered to help prevent childhood drowning and attempt to set a record for the largest swimming lesson ever.
Organizers of the World's Largest Swim Lesson - which included a group in Landover, Maryland - attempted to set a Guinness Book of World Records mark Friday for the largest swimming lesson ever conducted.
The current record, established in 2013, is 32,450 participants hosted by 432 facilities in 13 countries. This year, 48 states and 26 countries signed up.
The D.C. area has already had a handful of drownings this summer season, including a teen who died in Silver Spring this past Sunday.
Around 400 children drown around the country each year. Drowning is the number-one unattended childhood death nationwide.
