Backup generators and solar panels are about to be installed at the Little Patuxent water reclamation plant in Howard County. Groundbreaking is set for Monday.
The new features are aimed at preventing sewage overflow. Last year, Hurricane Sandy knocked out electrical lines to the plant. That caused a large overflow of untreated sewage.
Last week, a power outage knocked pumps offline, releasing millions of raw sewage in the Little Patuxent River.
