Virginia Tax Free Weekend started Friday as consumers shop for bargains at a variety of retail stores in the region.

The sales tax holiday will officially end at 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 6.

Customers searching for deals can qualify for items ranging from school supplies to emergency preparedness goods.

School supplies, clothing, shoes, hurricane and emergency preparedness products, and Energy Star and WaterSense products are the items available for purchase.

The following is a breakdown of eligible goods for tax free weekend:

School supplies, clothing and shoes:

1) Qualified school supplies must be $20 or less per item

2) Qualified clothing and shoes must be $100 or less per item

Hurricane and emergency preparedness items:

1) Portable generators - $1,000 or less per item

2) Gas-powered chainsaws - $350 or less per item

3) Chainsaw accessories - $60 or less per item

4) Other specified hurricane preparedness items - $60 or less per item

Energy Star and WaterSense products:

Qualifying Energy Star or WaterSense products purchased for noncommercial home or personal use - $2,500 or less per item
