Laurel playground fires under investigation, press conference Thursday

Prince George's Fire and Laurel Police are jointly investigating seven fires in the city of Laurel, including at playgrounds. They’re appealing to the public for help.

The incidents include a number of arson fires along with two fires that remain under investigation and are considered "incidents of interest," according to Laurel Mayor Craig A. Moe. Moe spoke at a press conference Thursday morning.

The joint investigation is aimed at identifying the people responsible for the fires occurring in and around the city, including playgrounds and one at a restaurant during the lunch rush.

All but one of the fires happened in March--the other happened in January.

Some of the fires were intentionally set, while others still remain under investigation, police say. The cause of two fires at the Emancipation Park and Discovery are related and police are trying to determine if the other five are related as well.

The March 8 fire, where two juveniles were arrested, not believed to be related.

A $10,000 reward has been established by the City of Laurel in an effort to gain more information about the incidents.
