Prince George's County police have identified a man who was shot to death in Lanham.

Thirty-nine-year-old Kevin James was shot Wednesday afternoon at his home on Old Franklin Lane. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Police say the slaying was not random but have not released any information about suspects or a possible motive.

Neighbors were left stunned after their normally quiet Prince George's County street became a crime scene.

Old Franklin Avenue is home to about a half-dozen residences; the property where the shooting happened is near where the street dead ends.

Authorities say the suspect and James got into a fight in the backyard, before James was shot. James made it to the front of the home and collapsed. He was taken to the hospital and later pronounced dead.

Prince George's County police are still looking for the suspect.

Old Franklin Avenue is in a wooded area and is difficult to find unless you are familiar with how to get there. Located just outside the Beltway between Lanham Severn Road and Annapolis Road, neighbors say most people don't even know it's there.

They are shocked a murder could happen so close to home.

"Nothing goes on back here," said neighbor Giovanni Diaz. "Nothing like this has ever happened on this street since I've been here. It's always been quiet. No problems."

Although a number of residents on Old Franklin Avenue own their homes and have lived there for some time, neighbors say that was not the case at the home where the murder happened. They say the people living there were renters and had only been there a few months.

Neighbors did not think the shooting victim lived at the home; police said they didn't know if he did or not.
