One of Washington's most prominent hotels will likely be closed for a "prolonged period of time" while its new owners renovate it, the Washington Business Journal reports.

The sale of the L'Enfant Plaza Hotel to Stanford Hotels Corp. will likely be done by early December, and the hotel will likely close shortly thereafter for a major renovation, the Business Journal's Daniel Sernovitz reports.

Stanford Hotel Corp. is paying nearly $49 million for the 372-room hotel, which opened atop L'Enfant Plaza in Southwest Washington in 1973. The hotel's website is not accepting reservations past Dec. 3.

There's no official date when the hotel is expected to reopen.
