ASPEN HILL, Md. (WJLA) - Montgomery County police have located a 10-year-old boy who did not get on his school bus this morning.
Kevin Salgado has learned a tough lesson about independence. He was running late Monday morning, and missed his school bus. Scared that he would get in trouble, the five-foot tall fourth grader ran to a nearby apartment building, where he hid in a stairwell for longer than six hours.
He had been last seen at his home along the 3000 block of Hewitt Avenue at 8:50 a.m. Monday. He was supposed to get on the bus to Harmony Hills Elementary School but his brother, who was on the bus, said Salgado never boarded.
His parents called police after realizing he was missing, and they quickly assembled a search team. Officers canvassed his elementary school, local strip malls, and various wooded areas – before calling in the bloodhounds.
With NewsChopper 7 was flying overhead, Kevin says a classmate found him squatting in that nearby stairwell.
"He went down and saw me, and told me that my parents, everybody was out and finding me. Then he told me to come to the back and come back home," said Kevin.
His mother, Maria Salgado, is glad it isn’t what she feared most: kidnapping.
Salgado says that he is glad to be back home.
