John Leopold resigns as Anne Arundel County Executive

John Leopold has resigned as Anne Arundel County County executive.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Anne Arundel County Executive John Leopold, convicted of misconduct, resigns.

Leopold was found guilty on two counts of misconduct in office on Tuesday. One of those counts related to Leopold using his security detail to perform political activities while on the job. The other involved making a secretary and members of his detail empty his urine catheter bag for months in 2010.

Leopold, a two-term Republican, has been suspended as county executive as a result of the judge's finding. John Hammond, the county's chief administrative officer, has been named acting county executive.

The process of selecting a new county executive will take about a month.
