Jhonte Coleman killed, 5 others injured in fight in Dupont Circle (Video)
A man was fatally shot and five others were wounded in a fight at a Dupont Circle establishment early Sunday morning.
Jhonte Coleman, 34, of Suitland, Md. was fatally shot, according to Metropolitan police.
At 2:34 a.m., police responded to a shooting in the 1300 block of Connecticut Avenue NW. Police are reviewing surveillance camera video for a suspect in the incident at the Heritage Indian restaurant.
A fight began inside the restaurant and club, D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said, before spilling out onto the sidewalk. Three men were shot and three men were stabbed. One of the people stabbed was found inside the bar, Lanier said.
All of the people involved reside in Maryland, she said.
Coleman is a nurse trainee who was celebrating a friend’s birthday.
"My son really didn't deserve this, I mean just one night out in two months,” said his mother Sandra Holland. “I think he hadn’t been out in two months and this happened to him."
Coleman’s parent came to the medical examiner Monday afternoon to identify his body.
A police technician collected video from surveillance cameras of numerous businesses Monday.
Promoters Mel Productions put on the Sunday event. It's the same group that hosted similar events with similar results, says Councilmember Jim Graham, such as one on June 18.
Graham said people were beaten and an alcohol board investigation called for the club to be punished, but the matter is still under review.
"The D.C. government might have been able to avoid this occurrence,” Graham said.
One man who's worked at numerous clubs called for D.C. police to be posted outside of clubs for the public's safety, saying the clubs’ security is not enough.
"These people causing trouble in these clubs, they already know, who's gonna stop me, security that aren't armed?” said Curtis Thornton.
