Jed Bylsma, Montgomery County police officer, kills self

A Montgomery County police officer shot and killed himself early Monday morning after he was stopped by a state trooper for allegedly speeding and driving under the influence.

State police identified the deceased officer as Jed R. Bylsma, 30, of Gettysburg, Pa. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The incident started at about 1:30 a.m., when a Maryland state trooper who was patrolling on Rt. 50 near Rt. 404 pulled Bylsma for allegedly speeding near Skipton Creek.

Bylsma told the trooper he was an officer with the Montgomery County police and appeared to be under the influence, authorities say.

Bylsma then fled the scene in his vehicle with troopers following behind him, authorities say. Troopers deployed “stop sticks” on Rt. 50 at Airport Road and stopped the suspect’s vehicle.

Police approached Bylsma’s vehicle and found him with a gunshot wound to the head. Troopers saw a handgun near Bylsma's hand in the center console of the car.
