PETERSBURG, Va. (AP) - Police say a body recovered from the Appomattox River has been identified as that of one of two college students missing since Saturday.

Media reports say Chesterfield County police said the body recovered Monday is been positively identified as that of 19-year-old Marvell Edmonson. The search continued Tuesday for a fellow Virginia State University freshman, 19-year-old Jauwan M. Holmes.

Authorities have been searching for the two since they entered the chilly river with a group near the campus in Petersburg. They were last seen near the Martin Luther King Bridge.

A university spokesman says the two students were not participating in any activities related to the school. Spokesman Thomas Reed says the disappearance is under investigation, after a number of social media posts claimed the men were taking part in some sort of initiation ritual.

Reed says they were not participating in any VSU-sanctioned events, but that hazing had been a problem with some groups.

Authorities planned to continue the search until dusk.
