D.C. Councilman Jack Evans announces he’s running for mayor next year, joining fellow Councilmembers Muriel Bowser and Tommy Wells in the race.

Mayor Vincent Gray has not said whether or not he will run for re-election.

Evans made his announcement Saturday near Logan Circle, WTOP reports, emphasizing growth and making the District’s schools “the best in the country.”

Evans, Councilmember for Ward 2, was first elected to the council in a 1991 special election. He was re-elected in 1992 in a regular election and re-elected every four years since, including 2012.{ }

Evans was Chair Pro Tempore (Vice Chair) of the council from 1999-2010.
