Investigation underway after hidden camera found at Prince George's County school

Investigation underway after hidden camera found at Prince George's County school (ABC7)

An investigation is underway in Prince George’s County after a hidden camera was found in an administration office within a school.

Prince George's County Public Schools CEO Dr. Kevin Maxwell and Prince George's County Police Chief Hank Stawinski made the announcement Monday afternoon from police headquarters in an effort to be transparent.

Currently, officials are not releasing the name of the school where the hidden camera was found, nor the name of the person who found it. Investigators believe the camera had been in the office for several months.

"I think once you begin an investigation, I think you should be as transparent as you can be," Maxwell said. "But in this case, I asked the chief to investigate a matter in the school system [to] make sure we came forward in a transparent way."

Police are reassuring parents that the camera was not found near a bathroom or inside a school locker room.

On Friday, ABC7's Brad Bell reported the FBI is now assisting the police in the forensic examination of the data on the camera. The camera had been in the office for several months.

Multiple sources have told ABC7 the camera, which was disguised as a smoke detector, was placed in the office as part of an internal school investigation that ended some time ago.

The camera only recorded video and did not film students.
