FALLS CHURCH, Va. (AP) - A bald eagle found last weekend by Metro tracks near the Van Dorn Street station has been euthanized.
Ken Knowles of the Raptor Conservancy of Virginia told WUSA-TV on Sunday that his group had hoped to rehabilitate the bird, but its injuries were too extensive.
The group worked with Metro and animal control to rescue the eagle in Alexandria last weekend. One of the bird's wings was damaged, but it's not clear how the bird was injured.
The bald eagle is a protected species and this eagle's remains will be shipped to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service' national repository in Denver. Its feathers will be made available to certain Native American tribes for use in religious rituals.
