Howard County officer, two others injured in crash

A Howard County police officer, a man he had in custody and a driver who hit them are all in the hospital after an early morning crash.

Shortly before 2 a.m., Trooper First Class James Smith of the Maryland State Police responded to a crash on Rt. 144 near Griffith Road in Mount Airy.

Smith found several Howard County units parked on the eastbound shoulder. He learned that the crash to which he had been dispatched had occurred in Howard County.

Driver Matthew Griffis was involved in the crash and had left the scene on Penn Shop Road but was found and taken into custody by Howard County Officer Richard Romberger.

Romberger was standing on the passenger side of his patrol car with Griffis when they were hit by a 2000 Volvo S-70 driven by Ricky Epperson. State police believe Epperson was traveling east toward the stopped police cars, all of which had their emergency lights activated, when he failed to stop. He clipped the front on the parked State Police patrol car, hit the Howard County patrol car and hit Officer Romberger and Griffis.

Trooper Smith called for medical personnel to respond and Maryland State Police helicopters transported the three injured men.

No charges have been filed at this time.
