Howard Brooks sentenced to 24 months probation

(AP, ABC7) - A former campaign aide to District of Columbia Mayor Vincent Gray was sentenced Wednesday to{ }24 months of probation and ordered to perform 200 hours of community service for lying to investigators about payments from the Gray campaign to another candidate.

Howard Brooks, 64, is one of three former Gray aides to plead guilty to crimes related to the 2010 campaign.

The court also ordered Brooks not to participate in any political campaign without the prior written approval of authorities.

Gray defeated incumbent Adrian Fenty in the Democratic primary. Brooks admitted he lied to the FBI about payments to Sulaimon Brown, a minor candidate who prosecutors say was paid to stay in the race and disparage Fenty.

Prosecutors told the court that he has provided "substantial assistance" to investigators, and because of that the government won't oppose a sentence of probation.
