(AP, ABC7) - A 102-year-old Canadian woman who served as a U.S. Army nurse during World War II is visiting Arlington National Cemetery to return a favor.
Hilda Cann of Kelowna, British Columbia, brought a special tablecloth Thursday to the Women in Military Service for America Memorial at the cemetery in northern Virginia.
First Lt. Cann was working at an Army hospital in England when one of her dying patients asked her to tell his wife in Cincinnati that he loved her.
Cann delivered the message in person and received a linen tablecloth as thank-you gift from the grateful widow.
Officials say Cann asked her son on her 100th birthday to help her return the treasured memento to the American people. This visit fulfills that request.
"I wish she'd see this on tv and come and find us," Cann said. "I'd love to talk to her."
