Mark Mayo, heroic Navy sailor, to be buried at Arlington Cemetery Friday
ARLINGTON, Va. (AP) - A 24-year-old sailor who was fatally shot protecting another sailor aboard a Navy destroyer is being laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery.
U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Mark Mayo of Hagerstown is being buried Friday as a hero.
The Navy says it's awarding Mayo the Navy Marine Corps Medal. That's the highest noncombatant decoration for heroism by a sailor or Marine.
Adm. Mark Ferguson, vice chief of naval operations, was set to present the award to Mayo's family privately before the burial.
The Navy says Mayo was killed aboard the USS Mahan at Naval Station Norfolk, Va., after he dove in front of another sailor to protect her from a civilian truck driver who had seized her gun.
