Doppler radar showed a strong cell moved through the area east of I-95 in northeastern Stafford County, causing damage to houses and leaving residents without power.
The weather service confirmed a tornado crossing I-95 just north of the entrance to Quantico. A video showing a twister was posted to the Facebook page of InsideNoVa.
At 5:26 p.m. Thursday, Stafford County Fire and Rescue Units responded to 108 Blossom Lane for an activated fire alarm.
Officials learned of reports that a tornado had touched down in the area. A responding unit saw several trees down and several damaged homes. An initial assessment revealed several homes with minimal damage and no injuries.
Firefighters placed polyethylene over the damage on eight homes that required immediate attention to prevent further damage, a press release said.
Heavy rains sent the Fairfax County Fire swift water rescue team into action. Motorists had to be rescued from a flooded road in Chantilly, Va, around 8 p.m. at the intersection of Walney Road and Mariah Court. The intersection is closed.
A flash flood warning has been issued for Fairfax, Madison, Culpeper, Rappahannock and Fauquier counties late Thursday. Flash flooding was reported there and the National Weather Service expects that additional rain will worsen the flooding.
In addition, a coastal flood advisory is in effect until noon Friday for Prince George's, Charles, St. Mary's, Calvert, Prince William and Harford counties as well as Manassas, Stafford and King George.
A suspected tornado ripped the roof off a house in Louisa County. Here's a photo of that poor, bald plantation home. The 250-year-old home withstood the revolutionary and Civil wars at the historic Sylvania plantation. No injuries have been reported.
The storm tore siding and shingles away from of townhouses off of Jefferson Davis Highway on Blossom Lane. A street sign was twisted in the wind and streets are in the dark. Neighbors tell WJLA they believe a tornado blew through.
Just down the road at the Highway Barber Shop at 3965 Jefferson Davis Hwy, a tree crashed through the roof. Winds also damaged a car dealership nearby.
Dozens of trees were twisted and broken near Warrenton-Fauquier airport and Longstalk Lane. A porch was blown off onto a house roof. A barn and shed were flattened and of a barn wrapped around a tree, the weather service report.
Power is out throughout Northern Virginia. Dominion Power reports 4300 customers in the dark.
