GW students compete to collect used cell phones

WASHINGTON (AP) - Students at George Washington University are competing to collect used cell phones.

Tuesday is the first day of the month-long phone collection challenge. Student organizations are competing to collect the most phones.

The organization that collects the most phones will get $3,000 from the university, with second and third place worth $2,000 and $1,000 respectively.

The phones will be recycled, and the proceeds will go to fund technology projects in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Nepal.

The university has a goal of collecting 20,000 used phones and portable electronic devices. The competition ends Feb. 17.
