Foo Fighters attract thousands on opening night at The Wharf D.C, enhanced security
WASHINGTON (ABC7) —
The line wrapped around the pier on Thursday night at The Wharf, hours after a grand opening celebration with city officials and developers.
The 200,000 square feet retail space has been in the making for more than a decade.
“The development of this area has been amazing and I know it has taken a very long time to get to where it’s at,” said Gloria Waurzyniak.
The Foo Fighters were the main draw for many, who wanted to see them perform at the new concert hall -- The Anthem.
Some fans traveled from Denver and Chicago.
“I got the ticket six weeks and I said ‘I’m coming’, so here I am,” said Waurzyniak.
Bob Rubenkonig, the director of the Wharf Community Association, says there was enhanced security precautions for opening night.
That included security check points for concert goers.
“We do have a lot of security precautions, but a lot of it is done just to make sure people feel safe,” said Rubenkonig.
The fun continues through the weekend.
“Every single night, we have a headliner band,” said Rubenkonig.
Phase two of the project is expected to be completed in 2022.
