GERMANTOWN, Md. (WJLA) - Police in Montgomery County are investigating the suspicious deaths of two children in Germantown.
Officers responded to the 19000 block of Cherry Bend Drive around 9:30 a.m. Friday after a neighbor reported a vehicle with the door open and a knife laying outside.
Two children, ages one and two, were found dead inside the home. Two other children, ages five and eight, along with a woman, were transported to local hospitals.
"It's just heartbreaking," says Takeya Gray. "Horrible, very horrible."
"Devastating when kids are involved," says Michelle Smith.
Police say another woman ran out the back door of the home but was quickly taken into custody.
Officers were dispatched to the home Thursday evening after a neighbor noticed an unattended child in a car. Before officers arrived, two women exited the townhouse, retrieved the child, and re-entered the home.
Officers tried to speak with the residents but received no response at the door. Montgomery County Child Protective Services was notified and asked to follow up.
Neighbor Elisa Aloras may have unwittingly stumbled upon the murder weapon:
"I was walking first around 7:15 with my dog. I see the knife on the floor...very close to the car."
The car she is talking about is this blue Toyota Corolla where the unattended child was reportedly sitting in alone for hours, and which was towed from the townhouse late Friday night. The happy bumper sticker belies what police allegedly found outside the car: blood.
According to police, one of the women in the home is the 28-year-old mother of all four children. The other woman, age 21, is not believed to be a family member, but is believed to have lived at the home, officials say. She was initially believed to be a victim and was raced to a hospital, but sources close to the investigation say her wounds were superficial and likely self-inflicted. The two women have not yet been identified.
"They are innocent children," says Kristina Halon, a neighbor, after hearing the news. "What could they possibly have done? I'm going to go hug my three-year-old to death."
