Gerald Read, 58, was a Civil War scholar and Navy man who loved spending time with his longtime wife, daughter and three grandchildren, the Washington Post says.
Read, an information assurance specialist at the Naval Sea Systems Command who lived in Fairfax County, was killed Monday in the shooting at the Washington Navy Yard.
Read and his wife, Cathy, met while attending Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He later served in the Navy from 1977 until 2006.
His wife told the Washington Post that Gerald was passionate about his family, the military and to public service.
