(WJLA) - Police have arrested a 22-year-old Northeast Washington man in connection with four armed sex assaults and similar incidents along the Minnesota Avenue footbridge this month.
Gerald Canty has been charged with three counts of kidnapping, first-degree sexual abuse while armed, and assault with intent to rob for the following incidents:
On March 1, Canty allegedly approached a woman from behind in the 4000 block of Minnesota Avenue NE around 11 a.m., pointed a gun at her, and sexually assaulted her behind a building on Barnes Street NE.
On March 5, police say Canty approached a woman from behind in the 700 block of 44th Street NE around 11:30 a.m., announced he had a gun, and forced the victim to walk with him. After walking a short distance, police say Canty tried to rob the victim, but she was able to escape.
On March 7, Canty allegedly approached a juvenile from behind in the 4000 block of Minnesota Avenue NE around 7 a.m. and said he had a gun. The victim was able to escape. Twenty minutes later, another juvenile walking in the same area was allegedly approached by Canty, who asked her to join him. She was able to flee.
