Georgetown sexual assault victim fought off attacker

MPD investigators are on the hunt for a man who they say sexually assaulted a woman near her Georgetown home early Sunday morning, just two blocks south of the busy M Street corridor.

Police said the woman, 25, was in the 3200 block of Cherry Hill Lane NW at about 4 a.m. when a suspect came up behind her and groped her.

The woman reportedly was trying to get into her home at the time of the assault. She screamed and fought off her attacker.

Police describe the attacker as a white or Hispanic male, with dark straight shaggy hair, approximately 5-foot-9 to 6 feet tall, with a slim build. He has dark eyes.

The entry to the building sits off of a small alley. But residents say they have always felt safe coming and going.

“It actually is pretty well lit,” said one resident. “I’ve never really felt in danger or anything.”

The neighborhood is home to a number of women. Many of them young and single. Some of them who live just feet from where the attack took place plan to change her behavior.

“I try and use the buddy system anyways when I am out that late,” says resident Zoe Waltz. “It's always a smart thing. It's really a unfortunate.”
