WASHINGTON (WJLA) - A pedestrian who was struck early Friday morning by a garbage truck and then trapped underneath in Northwest D.C. was transported to a hospital with severe injuries. It was reported later that he died from his injuries.
The male victim was struck around 4:25 a.m. by a garbage truck that was backing into an alley next to a McDonald's at the intersection of 13th Street and New York Avenue NW. The garbage truck backed over the victim, trapping him underneath the rear tires and wrapping the victim's left leg into the tires, officials say.
The driver of the truck ran into the McDonald's asking for help, according to Ali Salman, a security guard working inside the restaurant. The victim was removed from underneath the truck and transported to a nearby trauma center. He was conscious and breathing when authorities arrived on the scene.
The stretch of 13th street between New York Avenue and I Street NW was closed for more than an hour while police investigated, but reopened just before 7:15 a.m.
