GAITHERSBURG, Md. (AP) - Friends and family members are sharing memories of a Frostburg State University football player who died after collapsing during practice.
A funeral service is scheduled for Thursday afternoon at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Gaithersburg for 22-year-old Derek Sheely.
Sheely collapsed Aug. 22 after being escorted from the field. He died late Sunday at the University of Maryland's R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.
Derek's father, Ken Sheely, says his son died from a head injury that he apparently sustained during contact drills.
He said his son died from severe head trauma and swelling of the brain. He said his son was in great shape entering the season, having worked out all summer.
The father says "if society can come up with a 100 new apps for an iPhone every day, it would seem like we would have the smarts to come up with one or two things every year" to improve football safety.
