Frederick County schools may change cell phone policy

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) - Frederick County public school officials say they're considering relaxing restrictions on student cellphone use.

The Frederick News-Post reported Thursday that Superintendent Terry Alban says it's time to update a policy that generally requires students to keep their cellphones off and out of sight during school hours.

Gov. Thomas Johnson High School Principal Marty Tarr says students should be allowed to use their phones during lunch and possibly during class changes.

The policy also prohibits student cellphone use during pep rallies and school dances. Student school board member Brandon Wharton calls the policy "misguided."

A superintendent's advisory committee will discuss cellphone regulations next month.
