FEMA denies Virginia's request for federal disaster assistance

Virginia's request for federal disaster assistance to help in the recovery of a deadly spate of tornadoes last month has been denied by FEMA.

Gov. Bob McDonnell requested assistance for the counties of Pulaski, Washington and Halifax and included a provision that would have allocated fundingfor Gloucester and Middlesex Counties.

29 tornadoes struck Virginia in April, killing ten people and destroying or damaging thousands of homes.

"We are examining the possibility of appealing the decision, but in the mean time, state resources will continue to support the efforts of local governments and volunteer organizations that are helping our citizens recover," McDonnell said in a statement.

FEMA also denied a request for funding for government projects to help protect homes and businesses prevent future storm damage.
