With Dunbar High School students as greeters, Safeway kicked off its “Feast of Sharing” Wednesday. The guests each year are Washington D.C.'s elderly and needy.
The event brings together people who might not normally come in contact with each other - from the mayor who spent time greeting to Safeway employees and their families. It's held at the Convention Center, where turkey, dressing and all the trimmings are served.
Many families were there, like Dale McGee of with six of his seven children.
"It’s a blessing on Thanksgiving,” McGee says.
The servers included ABC7’s Pamela Brown, among hundreds of volunteers. The Dunbar and Coolidge High School football teams will play in a Turkey Bowl Championship Thursday.
Beyond food, free HIV screening and free flu shots were offered and computers were set up by employment services so people could search and apply for work.
