Jeffrey M. Woods, of Alexandria, killed in Franconia crash

      Fairfax County Police have identified a man killed when his car crashed head-on into a marked cruiser in the Franconia area of Alexandria on Monday.

      The driver, 52-year-old Jeffrey M. Woods, of Alexandria, was pronounced dead at the scene, police say.{}

      The accident happened just before 3 a.m. Monday near the intersection of Franconia Road and Gum Street, Fairfax County Police spokesman Don Gotthardt said. A car was traveling westbound on Franconia when it suddenly veered to the left and ran head-on into a county police cruiser, injuring a 30-year-old Fairfax County officer.

      The car, driven by Woods,{}burst into flames.

      The officer was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Gotthardt says. He is a seven-year veteran of the department.

      Gotthardt{}says the cruiser's lights and siren were not active at the time of the crash.

      All lanes of Franconia Road were closed for several hours.
