For Gary and Luise Gaal all they really needed was new windows for their home in Alexandria, Virginia.
But after winning the "Extreme Exterior Makeover" the Gaal's found themselves with a whole new home exterior: a makeover complete with new windows, siding, stone veneer, roofing, garage doors, and energy efficient upgrades.
The $50,000 award came in the form of a complete outside remodeling from the case design Remodeling firm in Washington, DC. Case had won the money to divvy out to deserving family in need, by Ply Gem, a company specializing in designing exteriors.
The Galls were an easy choice to receive the award. Gary Gaal has been a fixture in his community for more than 20 years.
"He served our country in the Army as a lieutenant col. for 20 years, was on the Pentagon for 9/11 but then went on to 19,000 of volunteer hours," Bruce case, President of Case Design Remodeling said of their choice for the winners.
Gaal had logged those 19,000 hours by volunteering with the Police Department, the Fire department and even the ski patrol.
Today, at the unveiling of the new look of his home, Gaal said he never expected any of that would lead to today.
"I am just really overwhelmed by the amount of attention and ability to be able to serve the community," Gaal said outside his home today, "I love it all."
Gaal and his wife cut the ceremonial red ribbon hanging outside their new front porch today with neighbors, volunteers, and representatives from both companies, Case Design and Ply Gem, who made this happen.
The Gaal's were chosen from more than 16,000 applicants for Mr. Gaal's dedication to the community and giving his time for free.
"He just gave back to give back, not because he was looking for anything in return," Bruce Case said.
The Gaal family home was also in need of an update - with an old, outdated exterior from the 1970's, rotten wood and sagging windows. Workers fast-tracked the exterior work to unveil the new product to the couple today.
While the main changes are mostly cosmetic and aesthetic - there are also other changes that the eye can't see - with energy efficient upgrades like triple pane windows and a solar powered attic fan.
But perhaps the best part, Gary Gaal said today, is that his wife will stop "hounding" him to make those improvements by himself.
