EXCLUSIVE: Man at center of D.C. twerking sex abuse case reveals identity, speaks out

Washington Tharpe (ABC7)

7 On Your Side sat down with the man at the center of a sex abuse case that captured national attention.

For the first time, Washington Tharpe, a 40-year-old local middle school teacher, revealed his identity and spoke on camera about an October afternoon when two women were caught on video twerking on him and assaulting him.

Tharpe explained it was much more than the gas station surveillance video that went viral. He said he wasn't just upset that two women were twerking on him. He claimed the assault lasted ten minutes both inside and outside a New York Ave. gas station and continued inside the car wash where the two women followed him. Tharpe said he wasn't sure if he was being set up in a robbery and explained how he feared for his life.

"You have been reading comments about yourself without anyone knowing who you are," Donelan asked him. "Now you are going on camera with your name and your face. That takes a lot of courage. Why did you feel that was so important?"

Tharpe replied, "You know what it is so funny? Like right now, I don't think it has anything to do with courage. I am like, I am so comfortable because I know the truth. I didn't commit a crime. I didn't do anything wrong, so I have nothing to worry about. It is not about me being afraid or not afraid or embarrassed or not embarrassed. I am speaking the truth. Maybe it will help someone else in the future."
