Ex-Va deputy, inmate both convicted in jail altercation

CULPEPER, Va. (AP) - A former Culpeper County sheriff's deputy and an inmate have been convicted of charges stemming from an altercation at the jail.

Media outlets report that Culpeper County General District Court Judge Roger Morton heard the two cases at the same time Wednesday.

Morton found former deputy Alma Brown guilty of one misdemeanor assault and battery charge. The inmate, 27-year-old Frances Ilene Perkins, was found guilty of three misdemeanor assault and battery charges involving Brown and two other officers.

Morton fined Perkins $100, which he suspended. Perkins received 30 days in jail on each charge but the judge suspended 20 days of each sentence.

Brown is one of five deputies who were fired following the incident.
